What is Oxalic Acid?
Oxalic acid is a common cleaning chemical that, like other acids, can be used for a variety of different uses. The acid is commonly found in plants such as rhubarb and buckwheat and is typically available for purchase in powder form. The powder is then mixed with water to produce oxalic acid, which should always be used sparingly because it can be dangerous in high doses.
Common Uses for Oxalic Acid Powder
Oxalic acid is commonly used to remove rust from countertops as well as plumbing pipes and even sinks and bathtubs. This ingredient is commonly found in rust removal products located in your local home improvement store or commercial supply house.
-Removes Stubborn Stains
Oxalic acid can also be used to remove stubborn stains such as food, ink, and many others. It acts as a stain remover to gently ‘eat’ the stain away while leaving the base surface largely unharmed. You can use oxalic acid to remove stains found on brick, linoleum, vinyl, wood and stone, but avoid using the product on any flooring that is sealed as it will eat through the finish.
Oxalic acid can also be used as a bleaching agent for stone and wood. Wood, when exposed to outdoor elements can begin to turn gray. By applying oxalic acid, the wood can be restored to its original wood color. Sometimes this acid will be used by furniture makers to lighten stained areas prior to refinishing or when trying to remove stains from old wood floors.
Aside from the various uses listed above, oxalic acid can be used in a variety of other manners including:
- In wastewater treatment plants to remove calcium from wastewater
- As a reducing agent in developing film
- A grinding agent for polishing marble
Safety Precautions When Handling Oxalic Acid
Pure oxalic acid can be very dangerous due to its toxic and corrosive nature. Because of this, it should always be handled carefully. When mixing the powder with water, it’s important to always wear latex gloves for skin protection. Additionally, you should always use a dust mask to prevent the fumes from getting into your lungs and safety glasses to protect your eyes from any irritation due to the chemical. We also always encourage our customers to mix oxalic acid in an area that is well ventilated, preferably outdoors.
